Born in 1969 in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, Aeri Lee is a Korean artist specializing in traditional Korean painting. She received her BFA and MFA in Korean painting from Sookmyung Women's University, where she also completed a PhD in visual arts. She is currently a visiting professor at Sookmyung Women's University.
Aeri Lee's work is distinguished by the use of traditional Korean materials such as hanji (mulberry paper), ink, and gouache. She is particularly recognized for her depictions of the physalis, also known as the Chinese lantern or ground cherry. In Asian culture, this plant symbolizes happiness, fortune, success, and fertility. Through her works, Lee explores these themes by creating ornamental compositions where physalis are often depicted with harmonious lines and soft colors, evoking the flow of life and the importance of nature.
In addition to her exhibitions, Aeri Lee has collaborated with various institutions and companies. In 2023, she participated in a collaboration with POSCO STEELEON entitled “PosART” and was an art columnist for Q magazine. She has also collaborated with CEVO Mobility in partnership with KLAMP Gallery, as well as with Col.l.age+ for a media collaboration.
