MOON Min-soon

Moon Min-soon was born in South Korea and has lived and worked in the Paris region since 2002.

A graduate of Fine Arts from Hong-ik University in Seoul, the Beaux-Arts de Lyon, and a Master of Plastic Arts from Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Moon Min-soon is currently a doctoral student. Her unique artistic approach combines installations, performances and exploration of various mediums, working with natural elements such as fire, earth, wood and smoke. The forms of her work are ceramics as well as drawing, paper, photography, and other mediums giving way to minimalism.

Her work questions the materiality of elements, the interpenetration between dispersion and concentration, disappearance and appearance, materiality and immateriality, control and chance, flat surface and volume. These paradoxical contrasts are embodied in minimal and refined forms, expressing silence while revealing a profound complexity. Mediation is at the heart of Moon Minsoon’s approach.

On the smooth surfaces of her ceramics, traces of smoke, left by the kiln firing process, evoke ink impregnated on paper. These tactile and visual imprints amplify the sensory experience of the spectators, while connecting them to fundamental questions about time and memory.

A recognized artist, Moon Min-soon has presented her works in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Among her solo exhibitions are Galerie 89 in Paris (2012), the Centre d’Arts Plastiques in Daejeon, Korea (1999) and Galerie NC in Pusan, Korea (1998). Her most recent group exhibitions include Art Paris 2024 (Grand Palais Éphémère, Paris), L’écho des formes and Au-delà du visible (Espace 24 Beaubourg, Paris), as well as artist residencies at the Hanji Millennial Museum, Jeonju, Korea. In 2023, she also participated in Encroisement, Hommage à Shin Sung-Hy (Espace 24 Beaubourg, Paris) and Art Paris 2023 (Galerie Françoise Livinec, Grand Palais Éphémère, Paris). Her previous collaborations include landmark exhibitions such as Réveiller l’eau qui dort (Huelgoat, Brittany, 2022), Sublimes (La Halle Roublot, Fontenay-sous-Bois, 2021), and Yeon-Ondes immatérielles (Bastille Design Center, Paris, 2019).

Her deeply meditative works transcend the boundaries of materiality and immateriality. By exploring the abysmal absence and the fullness of existence, Moon Min-soon invites us to reflect on the fragility of the universal.
