In the Waves series, initiated in 2009 and forming a central axis of her artistic practice, Ko Song-Hwa creates works in which materiality asserts itself with immediate elegance before the eye. The tracing of these waves, unfolding within a painting of deep tonalities, generates a play of light with infinite vibrations that infuse the composition with perpetual motion. This broad yet delicate line draws upon her perfect mastery of traditional calligraphy, practiced since childhood, which imparts a profound authenticity to her canvases. The gesture, marked by the imprint carved into the material, also belongs to the art of engraving, which Ko Song-Hwa cultivates with equal virtuosity.
Under Ko Song-Hwa’s brush, painting transcends its aesthetic framework. The waves—luminous, and perhaps even sonorous—invest the canvas with an evocative force that transforms the pictorial space. It becomes water, earth, or air: an elemental form whose significance is well known in the Korean pictorial tradition, so deeply connected to the presence of the elements at the heart of a work of art.

Focus on the spirit of painting, draw delicate lines… I believe that light and sound have been transformed into a spiritual wave.
